Home | Australia | Back to Sailing Shimoda

We departed Fiji in a hurry. Shimoda needed to get to Australia and cleaned up before John & Ruth arrived. On the way the our weather window closed and we ended up tacking back and forth outside the Great Barrier Reef waiting for daylight. When dawn arrived we beat hard through the Great Barrier Reef and spent all day beating toward land. Evening found us far from any anchorage so we sailed north behind the reef toward Cairns. Everything went well until we got to a tricky part of the channel where all the navigation lights were yellow; no red and green lights here! Shimoda spent the rest of that night slowly sailing back and forth in a section of the channel we knew. Once again, dawn came and everything was obvious. We arrived in Cairns by lunchtime and cleared. Within a few weeks Shimoda belonged to John & Ruth. Esther and I found ourselves sitting in a motel room in Port Douglas with 12 bags of luggage and no plan.

We rented a backpacker van from Wicked Rentals and took a "tiki tour" of Queensland. Before it was all over we visited Cooktown, Surfers Paradise, Sydney, Noosa and Frazier Island. We learned how to surf and crack a macadamia nut (driving over them with a car won't do it).

When I find the rest of the pictures we will post them. We have a few of our great friends Trevor & Jolanta on Magnetic. Trevor has mastered the art of homebrew aboard a boat!
